Spring has sprung and so have the cherry blossoms! 🌸🌸🌸 Cherry blossoms are Japan's national flower and hold great cultural significance. In Japan, the annual blooming of cherry blossoms is celebrated with picnics and parties under the trees, a tradition known as hanami.
FUN FACTS about cherry blossom trees:
Did you know that cherry blossom trees only bloom for about two weeks each year? That's why they're such a precious sight to see! The cherry blossom has also become a symbol of friendship between Japan and the United States, thanks to the thousands of cherry trees gifted to the US by Japan in 1912.
Cherry trees come in many varieties, and different varieties can produce fruit that range in color from bright red to almost black.
Some species of cherry trees can live for more than 100 years, while others may only live for a few decades.
Cherry blossoms are edible and are often used in traditional Japanese cuisine, such as sakura mochi (sweet pink rice cakes wrapped in cherry blossom leaves) and sakurayu (cherry blossom tea).
The cherry blossom has also inspired many works of art and literature throughout history, including famous paintings by Japanese artist Hokusai and poems by poets such as Matsuo Basho.
